Seafarers have long-heard of the intriguing, yet outrageous, icons and effigies created by islanders   in remote areas   ~ the fiery combination of imagination and creativity born of the trash, scuttled items, treasures ,offerings from the tides and damaged fauna and flora after tropical storms and hurricanes. The people feel all of these bright and beautiful, cheap and lavish items are gifts from their gods and thusly, they create icons to their guiding spirits. We aboard Nautilus have been privileged to discover some of these isolated island communities and we have traded fabrics, coins, food and other items for several striking examples of what has come to be called "Cargo Cult." We invited you to enjoy the craftsmanship and ingenuity invested in these pieces ~ but do ask you to remember that each of these works of art is also, first and foremost, a religious icon.
